Implant Ultrasound Assessment

Rapid, accurate assessment of breast implant integrity — results on the day

Breast implants are safe and durable devices, but like all medical implants they benefit from periodic monitoring. Ultrasound imaging allows early detection of internal rupture, capsular contracture and changes in surrounding tissue — often before symptoms develop.

When to seek an assessment

Change in shape

Any change in breast shape, new asymmetry, or the sensation that an implant has shifted position.

Pain or discomfort

New pain, pressure, unusual softness or firmness in the breast area.

Unexplained swelling

Localised swelling, redness or warmth without a clear cause.

Older implants

The FDA recommends a first imaging study (ultrasound or MRI) 5 to 6 years after implantation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter. Older implants that have never been assessed warrant assessment.

Following trauma

A road accident, fall or direct blow to the chest area is an indication for a proactive assessment.

Routine monitoring

Even without symptoms, the FDA recommends imaging every 2 to 3 years following the first study at 5 to 6 years. This applies to silicone gel implants; saline rupture is visible without screening imaging.

The assessment process

01

Initial consultation

A preliminary discussion to gather details about your implants — type, age and date of surgery. Bringing any documentation from your original operation is helpful.

02

Ultrasound scan

A non-invasive, painless scan lasting approximately 20–30 minutes, performed at the clinic with no special preparation required.

03

Results interpretation

Dr. Friedman reviews the findings and explains them clearly. Results are provided on the day of your appointment.

04

Recommended action

A management plan is agreed based on the findings — ranging from continued monitoring to corrective surgery or implant exchange.
